AASHTOWare Bridge Design-Rating

The following AASHTOWare Bridge Task Force product update is provided to keep all AASHTOWare Bridge Design and Rating (BrDR) Software users apprised of recent activity related to the development of the software. The Task Force is committed to providing these quarterly updates to help improve communication between the Task Force and those interested in the product. The Task Force met in Boise, ID for their June (Summer) meeting. The following is a summary of the major items discussed during the meeting.

Bridge Design and Rating 6.7

Bridge Design and Rating version 6.7 has been released and users began receiving notification on July 6, 2015. Thanks to the BrDR Testing TAG for all their assistance and commitment to the product. The following are some of the major highlights:

  • LFR and LRFR analyses of gusset‐plate connections in longitudinal steel trusses (partially funded by Oklahoma DOT)
  • LRFR analysis of floor systems and longitudinal steel trusses
  • LRFD design review and LFR and LRFR analyses of splice connections in steel girders (partially funded by New York State DOT)
  • LRFD design review and LFR and LRFR analyses of prestressed concrete beams with temporary pretensioned (cut) straight top strands (funded by Michigan DOT)
  • Splayed girder computation of distribution factors (funded by Michigan DOT and Illinois DOT)
  • Implemented RC Slab System in Substructure (funded by Kansas DOT)
  • General Procedure shear computation method control options for culverts (funded by Illinois DOT)
  • Culvert exposure factor enhancement (funded by Illinois DOT)
  • Culvert live load distribution factor enhancement (funded by Kansas DOT)
  • AASHTO LRFD Specification updates (7th Edition with 2015 Interim)
  • AASHTO Manual forBridge Evaluation Specification updates (2nd Edition with 2015 Interim).
  • Several user interface improvements requested by users
  • Numerous smaller Task Force and User Group requested enhancements.

Bridge Design and Rating Software Modernization

Software Modernization efforts continue. The final documents are currently going through review. It is anticipated that a $14.8M solicitation to fund the BrDR Modernization project over four years will be published for state participation in the summer of 2015. The Task Force anticipates participation from 20 state departments of transportation.

Bridge Design and Rating FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) have been assembled and posted on the Michael Baker support website (https://aashto.mbakercorp.com ). In addition, a FAQ link from the RADBUG website (www.aashtobr.org) has been established. The FAQ’s will also be made available within thesoftware. Additional topics and questions will be added to the FAQ’s as new subject matter is encountered.

FMWA BrIM Initiative

The Task Force is working with FHWA and their initiative on BrIM (Bridge Information Modeling) through the sharing of the Bridge Design and Rating database structure. As FHWA progresses on their effort, the Task Force will continue to remain engaged in their initiative. FHWA is hosting a workshop in Washington, DC in August, 2015 and we anticipate AASHTOWare Bridge Task Force involvement as we plan to be an integral part of the BrIM process moving forward.

Prestressed Design Tool

Development of the Prestressed Design Tool continues to move forward with an anticipated release in early calendar year 2016.

Steel Design Tool

Development of the Steel Design Tool has begun with initial work based upon the Prestressed Design Tool.

2015 RADBUG Meeting

RADBUG officers have posted details of the 2015 User Group meeting (August 4-5, 2015 in Albany, NY). The Conference Agenda has been completed and is posted on the Agenda Page of the 2015 RADBUG Registration Website. The agenda is comprehensive, including presentations on the status and future of the AASHTOWare Bridge Design and Rating products, current and planned functionality enhancements, the life span of a JIRA ticket, End User presentations on using BrDR on specific projects within the DOTs, FHWA bridge program initiatives, and creating BrDR reports. In addition, AASHTOWare BrDR Fundamentals and more advanced BrD and BrR training sessions will be offered. Information can be found at http://aashtobr.org/?page_id=80 regarding dates, agenda, registering for the conference, securing your hotel and travel reimbursement procedures. It’s not too late to register but hurry – hotel deadline is July 13th to secure the special group rate.


The Task Force continues to market AASHTOWare products at events including but not limited to the following:

  • Iowa DOT 3D Bridge Conference and Workshop ‐ April 14‐15,
  • AASHTO Subcommittee on Bridges and Structures (SCOBS) ‐ April 19‐24,
  • AASHTO Subcommittee on Information Systems (ASIS) ‐ May 18‐22,
  • International Bridge Conference (IBC) ‐ June 8‐12, and
  • AASHTO Subcommittee on Maintenance (SCOM) ‐ July 19‐23.

The Task Force is also working on creating one‐page marketing sheets that briefly outline the benefits of AASHTOWare and the capabilities of the AASHTOWare Bridge products.

Read Only JIRA Access

Based on the feedback from the RADBUG community, a read‐only access to the JIRA Support Center has been created for licensees that don’t have a named user JIRA account. The JIRA Support Center can be accessed from the Support page in the AASHTOWare Bridge Design and Rating Products’ website.

The Username/Password for the read‐only access is brd/brr. A Getting Started Guide is available in the Project Summary section after login to the JIRA Support Center. If you experience any problems or have any questions, contact us at BrDR@mbakerintl.com.
