AASHTOWare Bridge Design-Rating

July 26, 2016

The following Task Force product update is provided to keep all AASHTOWare Bridge Design and Rating (BrDR) Software users apprised of recent activity related to the development of the software. The Task Force is committed to providing these quarterly updates to help improve communication between the Task Force and those interested in the product. The Task Force met in Madison, WI for their June (summer) meeting. The following is a summary of some of the major items from the meeting:

2016 Rating and Design Bridge Users Group (RADBUG) Meeting

RADBUG Vice‐President, Phil Litchfield, ILDOT, participated in the June AASHTOWare Bridge Task Force meeting where we worked towards finalizing the agenda for the 2016 user group meeting. Thanks to the members of our user community who have volunteered to do presentations. We are looking forward to a great RADBUG meeting in Chicago, IL, August 2‐3, 2016.

AASHTO Staff Update

AASHTO recently hired a marketing manager, Arpine Baghdasarian, to provide support for the AASHTOWare products. Arpine is working to develop effective marketing strategies and to find better ways for the Task Force to communicate information to the AASHTOWare product users.

AASHTOWare Bridge Design-Rating Modernization

The AASHTOWare Bridge Design‐Rating Software Modernization Project is ramping up with the contract between AASHTO and Michael Baker International, Inc. executed for an April 1, 2016 start date. Twelve (12) states have agreed to fund and participate the project going forward. It is our understanding that several states are still considering participation and/or are working to get their paperwork submitted to AASHTO. Initial work is underway. New TAG/TRT groups will be formed to support a variety of tasks the Task Force has identified to assist in moving the Modernization Project forward. These tasks will include activities such as reviewing new user interface screens, reviewing/recommending reports, and beta testing new releases. States that are participating in the funding of the Modernization project will have first priority for TAG/TRT membership. If all TAG/TRT positions are not filled by Modernization project participating agencies, the Task Force will solicit volunteers from non‐participating states to fill any remaining positions. A short kick‐off TAG/TRT meeting is planned for August 4, 2016, the morning following the RADBUG meeting in Chicago for those members who are in attendance.

The more states that participate and contribute funding to support the BrDR Modernization Project will make more monies available to support the inclusion of the numerous enhancements requested by the user community. As states continue to come on board with this much needed project, their participation contributions will reduce the need for pushing the financial burden of the state requested enhancements past FY2020. Many states have not yet responded to the solicitation. If your agency has not responded, we encourage you to respond, even if you are unable to participate, so we can make the best financial decisions for the product.

As a reminder, there is a lot of information available on the developer’s website (https://aashto.mbakercorp.com) and user’s website (http://aashtobr.org/). On the user’s website, Task Force meeting minutes can be found http://aashtobr.org/?page_id=91. The June 2016 Bridge Task Force meeting minutes will be approved at the August Bridge Task Force meeting and published on the web site shortly thereafter. Otherwise, all past task force meeting minutes are posted on the website.

Please forward this on to others in your offices that might benefit from this information. Our email list is the official end user designees of the product, past attendees of the user group meeting and those that have requested to receive updates.
