AASHTOWare Project Data AnalyticsTM Update

February 28, 2018

There has been a lot of exciting activity in the AASHTOWare Project Data AnalyticsTM (formerly AASHTOWare Project Decision Support) area over the past few months. The pilot project to evaluate the feasibility of using the software as a service (SaaS) architecture and development approach for delivery of AASHTOWare Project Data Analytics model functionality wrapped up in November 2017. In December 2017, a Functionality Review Summit was held at Info Tech, Inc. headquarters in Gainesville, Florida. The goal of the summit was for agencies to review and prioritize AASHTOWare Project BAMS/DSSTM models and model functionality for future AASHTOWare Analytical Project Decision Support development efforts. Both projects had very successful results. The four-day summit had approximately 50 attendees, representing 22 agencies. The pilot involved three agencies – Kansas, Ohio, and Wisconsin – and results showed that AASHTOWare Project Decision Support interactive model functionality benefits from being developed with a SaaS approach. Key benefits from a SaaS approach include: 1) quick turnaround for developed software and the ability for users to provide immediate feedback, 2) use of Amazon Web Services (AWS) for a robust platform for development, deployment, and production usage, and 3) a software usage analytics dashboard.

The next step is to start releasing SaaS production functionality. The AASHTOWare Projectä Task Force (PTF) approved a project that started in February 2018 to deliver initial core production functionality for Line Item Profiles and Bid Evaluation Analysis by August 2018. An End User Designee letter went out in early February, inviting agencies to participate in this project, which offers usability on-site testing by those participants in Gainesville, Florida. If your agency is interested in participating in this project, please contact Melanie Douglass of AASHTO (mdouglass@aashto.org).

The PTF plans to solicit new funding in 2018 to support the continued development of approved AASHTOWare Project BAMS/DSS model analytical functionality in the web-based and SaaS AASHTOWare Project Decision Support software. Funding obtained through the solicitation reduces the time that it takes to complete the development. The proposed effort is planned to take advantage of the SaaS architecture to release model analytical functionality for production use throughout the project, as approved by the PTF. Participating agencies have input into defining the functionality and testing the new software in hosted SaaS environments, using their data prior to production release.

The first version of web-based AASHTOWare Project Decision Support is part of AASHTOWare Project 4.0. This includes interactive historical regression pricing analysis and a pricing service used by the AASHTOWare Project EstimatorTM and AASHTOWare Project PreconstructionTM modules. You can find information about historical data migration by logging into the Cloverleaf® website, selecting Status & Planning, and selecting the AASHTOWare Project BAMS/DSS Agency Migration Services link under Optional Services.
