AASHTOWare ProjectTM Strategic Plan FY2018 – 2021

Over the last few months, the AASHTOWare Project Task Force has been working to update our strategic plan. As a result, the Task Force will be presenting an overview of the AASHTOWare Project Strategic Plan FY2018-2021 at the 2017 PUG Conference in Montana. Following the conference, the plan will be distributed to the AASHTO Member Agencies.

Here is an overview of some of the items that the Task Force is focusing on in their Strategic Plan.

  • Optimize time to implementation
    • Consider ways to streamline collaborative development
    • Provide tools for agencies to test solutions soon after production release
    • Move towards Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and cloud solutions to reduce IT overhead and increase mobility for customers
    • Identify and develop licensing models or methods and/or work plan processes that sustainably fund new development, enhancements and maintenance to reduce the frequency for the need for solicitations
  • Provide Innovative Products
    • Submit proposals to utilize the Program Development Fund to perform strategic research
    • Leverage private sector partners’ expertise
    • Encourage third party development and integration
    • Investigate alternative development models
    • Move towards a flexible and quick responding web services based architecture through establishment of a framework to publish IT related standards in support of both AASHTOWare products and overall integration with state transportation IT systems.
    • Deliver an open architecture along with supporting documentation that will enable integration with agency systems, mobile development and promote data sharing across an agency’s enterprise.
  • Communicate the Value of AASHTOWare Project
    • ​​Document the value proposition of the AASHTOWare® Program
    • Execute a plan that communicates the value and just in time communications of the Program and products.

Once the plan has been published, it will include key goals for each objective listed above. The Task Force will report annually to the Special Committee on AASHTOWare and the user community on their progress.
