Introducing AASHTOWare OpenAPI

August 16, 2023

AASHTOWare is excited to announce, AASHTOWare OpenAPI

What is AASHTOWare OpenAPI?

AASHTOWare OpenAPI is a cloud-based solution built on the OpenAPI Specifications, incorporating an API management system that acts as the API request ‘switchboard’ for routing data to or from AASHTOWare applications. AASHTOWare OpenAPI allows you to leverage existing AASHTOWare and technology investments in an entirely new and efficient way.

What is the difference between the AASHTOWare Project AMS API and AASHTOWare OpenAPI?

AASHTOWare OpenAPI is a modernization of how AASHTOWare products can share data and services across the suite and with external applications. AASHTOWare OpenAPI:

  • Will contain a portfolio of APIs that work across AASHTOWare products and new services, such as the recently launched Alliance Program,
  • Provides a consistent way to share data and services instead of relying on different approaches for the AASHTOWare products,
  • Supports sharing APIs among the states,
  • Aligns AASHTOWare with how other modern software companies share data and services across product suites using consistent access methods and modern, industry-accepted technology standards, and
  • Allows broader, simpler, and more extensible use of DOT investments in AASHTOWare products and the forthcoming Alliance Program partner network to improve how states use data.

Compared to the AMS API, application developers, enterprise systems integrators, and other technical staff do not need to be intimately familiar with the data structure details to perform many fundamental tasks. Additionally, AASHTOWare OpenAPI facilitates using low-code and no-code tools that many states already use, while moving AASHTOWare to a more open platform. There are no plans to sunset AMS. However, new features in the future may only be accessible via AASHTOWare OpenAPI. Fortunately, AASHTOWare OpenAPI and AMS can work side-by-side.

Benefits of using AASHTOWare OpenAPI

  • Makes data easily accessible.
  • Allows for cheaper and quicker maintenance of data integration points.
  • Low-effort implementations.
  • Resources are available to make use of the system with little to no training.
  • Greater functionality and flexibility.
  • Immediate cross-platform, cross-stack, and language compatibility.

How to access AASHTOWare OpenAPI

State agencies interested in gaining access should visit api.aashtoware.org and submit their information using the sign-up form.

All third parties must go through the application process for an AASHTOWare Data Alliance membership to access AASHTOWare OpenAPI. This can be done by visiting aashtoware.org > Community > Alliance Program.

AASHTOWare OpenAPI is live as of July 2023. If you would like more information on AASHTOWare OpenAPI, please go to api.aashtoware.org.
