Georgia DOT’s Local Road Safety Action Plan

Challenge: In 2022, Georgia DOT was working toward achieving Vision Zero when they realized the need for increased local participation to reach their goal. In an effort to provide easy-to-use crash data to local roadway owners, GDOT worked with FHWA to utilize the AASHTOWare Safety powered by Numetric applications in the sharing of custom reports and dashboards with local roadway owners.

Solution: The creation of these dashboards & reports equips local users with a seamless approach to delve into the data, concentrating on each of the SHSP (Strategic Highway Safety Plan) Emphasis Areas. This allows for the pinpointing of the primary locations of crashes on roadways thus providing a means to easily rank and identify the roadways that may need further investigation. These solutions also provide links to the SS4A Grant program, FHWA’s LRSP website, and FHWA’s Proven Safety Countermeasures site.

“The data provided by these tools is already displayed as actionable items. This makes it easy for anyone to develop local plans to improve transportation safety.”

Results

  • During the first half of 2023, Georgia locals were awarded 20 SS4A grants totaling approximately $6.1 million in grant funding.
  • Georgia local users now easily access the information necessary to formulate data- driven decisions to improve safety.
