Hosting Adoption and Implementations

August 26, 2025

Let’s get up to date on where the AASHTOWare Project hosting initiative stands. Over half of all agencies that license AASHTOWare Project are now using its hosting service. The most recent to go live was the Alaska Department of Transportation (DOT) in January of this year. For those that don’t know, the hosting program has been in operation for several years, with the first hosted agency, New Jersey, recently celebrating its 10th anniversary.

A number of agencies are in the process of transitioning to a hosted environment. Six agencies, Florida, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, and New York State DOTs, along with the New York State Thruway Authority, are currently moving to hosting. With an average rollout time of nine months, these agencies are expected to be fully operational between December of this year and the first half of 2026. Once transitioned to a hosted environment, these agencies will enjoy benefits such as:

  • Faster upgrades
  • Reduced downtime
  • Multi-layer backup and recovery
  • Enhanced security

For agencies that have not yet moved to hosting, please contact your account manager to begin the process and take advantage of these benefits!

Speaking of top-of-the-line security, the hosting service is undergoing GovRAMP certification, its most rigorous testing yet. GovRAMP is a robust, standardized approach to cybersecurity verification, supporting a “trust but verify” model for the security of cloud service solutions offered to state governments. This rigorous third-party assessment ensures the hosted services meet or exceed a strict set of requirements, some of the most critical being:

  • Secure handling of sensitive data
  • Clear risk management framework for identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks
  • Continuous security monitoring framework

The certification process has been underway for several months, with authorization expected by the end of 2025. This certification will provide existing hosted agencies with greater peace of mind and will help expedite the vetting process for agencies considering the switch!
